I woke up in mid April of 2014 and could not bear any weight on my right leg. Overnight, I couldn't walk. The first doctor I saw told me I had advanced osteoarthritis, and asked me if wanted a cane or a crutch. That was pretty much it. I reviewed my condition with two separate doctors after that, and all reported deterioration in my right hip equivalent to a 70 year olds, also, present in my left hip. I was told that corrective surgery was two years off at least, and that managing pain and living with limited mobility was my future. I was only 39. I did my research and I found Dr. Boettner at HSS. I wrote a letter asking him to take me as a patient and gratefully he did in August '14. After several rounds of ineffective shots and more films that showed marked further deterioration, I had total hip replacement surgery on November 8th. The pre-op class prepared me and my family fully for my operation and how to best care for myself post. The nurses were fantastic. The PT's were with me the very next day to move me along physically and spiritually. I was walking around my block within a week of my replacement, and thanks to the expertise of Dr. Friedrich Boettner and truly, all the staff at HSS, I just practiced yoga for the first time-- on the anniversary of our initial consult. I am cane free, pain free, active today and happy to know that I have a winning team in my corner when it comes to my future care.
