Skiing, hiking, tennis, yoga, and long distance running have been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember. Like most athletes, when you’re young and logging lots of miles or just overextending yourself, you never think your body parts will eventually wear down. My first diagnosis of advanced osteoarthritis – bone on bone – was a devastating one. I didn’t know anyone under the age of 80 with a hip replacement and it felt like a death sentence for my active life. I chose HSS because of its reputation as one of the world’s best and was fortunate to have Dr. Boettner as my surgeon. He understood my desire to remain active and not let an artificial hip stand in the way. His less invasive anterior approach made my recovery faster and with fewer precautions. My first surgery was in September 2012, and the staff at HSS did an amazing job quelling my fears. The pre-op orientation, in-hospital care and post-surgery follow-up were first-class and made me feel that my recovery was truly important.
In late 2014/early 2015 I started experiencing similar pain on my other hip and I once again turned to Dr. Boettner. My second total hip replacement took place in April 2015. By June, I was able to hike with my family on a long-planned backpacking trip.
Thanks to Dr. Boettner and HSS I am enjoying my active life pain-free.
